“Celebrating the Treasures from the Tar Heel State”

Archives Week is a week-long observance of the agencies and people responsible for maintaining and making available the archival and historical records of our nation, state, communities, and people.  The Archives and Records Section will participate in this inaugural celebration with several events during the week.  Several exhibits are planned for display in the Search Room and in the lobby near the Search Room.  These exhibits include replicas of World War I posters, an exhibit on the lifecycle of records, and a history of the North Carolina State Archives.  In addition, each day of the week a different subject matter will be featured in a display in the Search Room.  Monday, October 10 the Carolina Charter will be on display, along with several other “treasures” from our collections.  Tuesday’s display will feature items from the Black Mountain College collection.  Maps will be the focus of Wednesday’s display.  Thursday women’s records will be featured.  On Friday items from World War I collections will be the focus.  For each of these displays, a complimentary virtual exhibit will be added to our website.

A behind the scenes tour of the Archives’ stacks will be offered Monday, October 10 and Thursday, October 13.  Times and spaces are limited, so please call Debbi Blake at 807-7301 for more information.  On Tuesday, October 12 at 1:30 p.m. Sarah Koonts will present a workshop on care and handling of your family papers.  It will be held in the Archives building in room 211.  For more information, please contact Sarah Koonts at 807-7339.  Section staff welcomes everyone to visit the Search Room between October 10-14th to help us in celebrating Archives Week.
