Seventh Annual Speakers Forum

You won’t want to miss the upcoming Seventh Annual Speakers Forum (online registration | downloadable PDF for mail-in registration) to be held on Saturday, 30 June 2012, at the Wake County Commons Building in Raleigh. NCGS is working with the Olivia Raney Local History Library to offer this event. 

This year, seven genealogists and librarians will speak on topics that range from ways to enhance basic genealogical techniques to more advanced use of the Internet for state-of-the-art approaches to genealogical research. There will be two sets of presentations during each of the four hour-long sessions, so you will be able to choose the topic that best fits your needs.

NCGS, Partnering with FamilySearch, Indexes 1.6 Million Loose Estates Records

In June of last year, NCGS volunteers began to index the microfilmed NC Loose Estates Records from original documents held at the North Carolina State Archives. Utilizing FamilySearch's way-pointing technology, over 1.6 million images have been indexed and made available.

As of March 23rd, 38 out of 100 North Carolina counties have been indexed, and at least two more counties will be completed and made available with the next anticipated publication this month.

NCGS Awards Guidelines

In response to requests for guidelines for genealogical publications or websites worthy of consideration for nomination for the annual NCGS Awards, the Awards Committee has prepared written criteria for outstanding works. 

Comparing one publication with another in its category to consider which is more worthy of an award, NCGS Award judges take into account what is good and what needs improvement in each publication with a number of specific qualities being considered, as appropriate, for periodicals, books, and websites.

Among the most rewarding of NCGS programs is its annual presentation of awards to honor outstanding efforts in publishing and contributions to the North Carolina genealogical community. These awards promote continued excellence in this field and also inspire others to publish abstracts and transcriptions of North Carolina county and state records, cemetery and Bible records, family histories, and society journals and newsletters and to develop informative genealogical websites. The Awards Committee urges you to join the society in recognizing the labors of deserving individuals and societies by submitting a nomination for an award in one of several categories.

The NCGS awards nominations are open from January until 15 August 2012.

NCGS News Is Going Electronic

The January 2012 issue of the NCGS News is the last issue that will be printed and mailed.

Beginning with the March 2012 issue, the NCGS News will be conveniently delivered to your e-mail inbox.

NCGS News will be published bi-monthly instead of quarterly beginning in 2012. That means you will receive six issues per year instead of four. NCGS News will now be able to offer more timely news about the North Carolina genealogical community to help you with your research.

The January 2012 issue of NCGS News was mailed to all members and will also be e-mailed to all members for whom NCGS has a valid e-mail address.
