NCGS and CM Library Announce Two Genealogy Events by J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA, in Charlotte, NC

Friday, 7 June 2013, 6:30 p.m. - The Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room will host J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA, in the Main Library, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Francis Auditorium (lower level), 310 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 (use E. 6th Street entrance across from the Hearst Tower parking garage). Mr. Lowe’s presentation, Diamonds, River Rocks, and Lumps of Coal, will provide an understanding of the connection of people, places and the events of our ancestors lives and how unique stories of their lives unfold. This is a FREE program.

Saturday, 8 June 2013 at ImaginON, The Joe & Joan Martin Center, 300 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC. Overlooked Genealogy Sources. J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA will provide four sessions to inform his audience of genealogical sources frequently overlooked. The lectures are: Follow a Case Through Court; Road Crews, Jury Selection, and Daily Court Action: Finding an Ancestor without a Census; Trails of Daniel Boone and Other Western Travelers; and Finding Your Landless Ancestors.

Come, listen to Mark, and hear of the other options available to find your elusive ancestors. Registration is required for this event.

UPDATE! NC Loose Estates – 3,371,321 Images!!!

The NC Loose Estates Records indexing project was just updated! There are now 3,371,321 images that are indexed and freely available!

As of January 29th, 68 out of 100 North Carolina counties have been indexed by decedent, in part or in whole! Currently, there are 138,899 individual estates that are indexed!

Two New CD Titles

The North Carolina Genealogical Society is proud to announce the release of two new titles in PDF format on computer CDs:

North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local History, Helen F. M. Leary, CG (Emeritus), FASG, Editor, Second Edition. This is the revised second edition of the book that set the standard for state research guides with its award-winning 1980 first edition. It is useful for research in nearly every southeastern state that had its legal foundation in common law. This 1996 edition includes a completely revised chapter on research strategies that addresses the needs of both novice and advanced genealogists. The PDF is completely searchable.
Abstracts of Vital Records from Raleigh, N. C., Newspapers, 1799–1839. The abstracts been scanned and saved on a fully searchable CD (PC and Mac compatible). Lois Smathers Neal (1912-1986) was a founder and charter member of the North Carolina Genealogical Society. A native of Haywood County, North Carolina, she was a graduate of Duke University and received her formal library training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
