Society Benefits

When you join the North Carolina Genealogical Society you join a group of people who share a common interest in the genealogy and history of the "Old North State." You will receive two award winning publications. The quarterly publication North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal contains well-researched articles of genealogical value and numerous abstracts of unpublished records relating to North Carolina. The NCGS News will introduce you to local societies across the state, and provide you with upcoming genealogical events in North Carolina and across the nation. Members of the Society may submit two free queries per year (four with family memberships) to be published in the Newsletter. You will be invited to attend, at a discount, the NCGS annual meeting and workshop, as well as any other NCGS sponsored programs.

Meetings and Programs

NCGS sponsors an annual meeting and workshop in Raleigh each year. Throughout the year the Society co-sponsors, with local societies, special workshops across the state. Local Societies should contact the Program Committee if interested in a joint program.

Workshops

Since 2006, NCGS has sponsored two or three workshops a year. This includes "The Speaker's Forum," where researchers and archivists from North Carolina to have a forum, allow new local speakers a venue to share their experience and knowledge.

Publications & Sales

Besides the NCGS Journal and NCGS News, the Society is involved in an active publication program. To request a complete listing of the NCGS publications, write to North Carolina Genealogical Society Book Sales, c/o Vickie Scott, PO Box 30815, Raleigh, NC 27622-08150. Current issues of the Journal and Newsletter are available to members only.

"Members Only" Web Site

The Society has established this website as a benefit of membership.The site includes the ability to create your user profile and enter your own queries. The NCGS Journal, 1975-2010 is placed here for viewing. We encourage members to add their own genealogical publications, which must be approved by the NCGS Board of Directors.  Additionally, non-institutional members can publish their research and findings for the benefit of other members and can publicize events and news by submitting articles directly to the website. Members can access members-only content and features on the site using the login form. If you are a member, but do not have website login information, contact the Webmanager.

Society Goals

The North Carolina Genealogical Society, chartered in 1974, is open to all who are interested in genealogical or historical research and in these goals:

  • to increase interest in and raise the standards or research and compilation by means of educational programs and publications;
  • to acquaint members with research sources and materials in North Carolina and elsewhere;
  • to serve as a medium of exchange of genealogical information; and
  • to promote the collection, preservation, and utilization of manuscripts, documents, and other materials of genealogical and historical value.

While not maintaining a library of its own, the Society promotes and encourages the development of the many fine research centers across the state. Books given to the Society for review purposes in the Journal are donated to the Genealogical Branch of the State Library of North Carolina located in Raleigh, NC.
