Volunteers Needed for Webinars

The North Carolina Genealogical Society needs volunteers for NCGS webinars coming up in 2012 and 2013. Volunteers will be trained to help facilitate these online events. The only requirement is that you need to have a good internet connection and headphones with a microphone. Because these events are virtual, you do not need to be in the Raleigh area to help. We would like to have 4-8 people on a list who can help with monitoring the meetings, helping with rehearsals, recordings, managing communications. Two New CD Titles

The North Carolina Genealogical Society is proud to announce the release of two new titles in PDF format on computer CDs:

North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local History, Helen F. M. Leary, CG (Emeritus), FASG, Editor, Second Edition. This is the revised second edition of the book that set the standard for state research guides with its award-winning 1980 first edition. It is useful for research in nearly every southeastern state that had its legal foundation in common law. This 1996 edition includes a completely revised chapter on research strategies that addresses the needs of both novice and advanced genealogists. The PDF is completely searchable.
Abstracts of Vital Records from Raleigh, N. C., Newspapers, 1799–1839. The abstracts been scanned and saved on a fully searchable CD (PC and Mac compatible). Lois Smathers Neal (1912-1986) was a founder and charter member of the North Carolina Genealogical Society. A native of Haywood County, North Carolina, she was a graduate of Duke University and received her formal library training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Your genealogy needs are important to NCGS. We have been busy creating new formats for our website, newsletter, and journal. The workshop offerings have become increasingly more versatile. We added the ability for members to submit articles and links of interest to North Carolina researchers to be published on the website. Now, we are asking for your input for future planning.

The NCGS survey of member preferences is here in an electronic format. Click on the “Survey” tab in the blue menu bar on the top of the home page, complete the survey, and click “submit” when done. You do not have to complete the survey again if you have mailed the survey form located in the fall NCGS newsletter. The online survey is identical to the one included with the newsletter.

We appreciate your membership in NCGS and this survey will help our committee chairpersons as they guide the Society into 2011 and beyond.

Publishing Local Society Contact Information

This is a reminder that the North Carolina Genealogical Society has a page for contact information about local genealogical and historical societies, libraries, and archives. This page is intended as a resource for members and non-members of the Society, and as a way to connect those interested in North Carolina genealogy with relevant groups and institutions.

Currently, 162 groups and institutions are listed in the directory. Updates to the directory are available via RSS (really-simple syndication) at http://bit.ly/ncgs-directory.
