The Cleggs of Old Chatham, edited by W. Harold Broughton, 1977,
hard cover, 6" x 9", 470 pages, indexed, illustrated. PRICE $20.00.
- This book was produced by the Clegg Family Association. It is the
story of Thomas A. Clegg and Bridget Polk - their kin and events in
their lives. A family tree of the first seven generations,
beginning with John Clegg who was born in England in 1656 and died
in Northampton County, Virginia, in 1704 is included. Thomas A.
Clegg, a great-grandson, moved to Chatham County in 1789. The
couple had 13 children, 138 grandchildren, and 417 great-
grandchildren, so there are many descendants living today.

- This book identifies the family and descendants of Lewis Tysor and
Susanna Harris. One family tradition holds that the Tysor family
of Chatham County is descended from Lewis Tysor who came from
France with Lafayette to fight in the American Revolution. Lewis
Tysor enlisted in Halifax County and later settled in Chatham
County where he purchased land in 1792.

- In 1868, the U.S. Congress established Freedman's banks to enable slaves to have a place of deposit. Each despositor was asked to provide place of birth, where brought up,
current residence, age, complexion, occupation, name of spouse, children, parents, brothers and sisters, as well as physical features. Despositors appear from across North Carolina and included Caucasians. An excellent
resource for African-American Genealogy.

Carolina, including marriage bonds, licenses, and minister
returns.
Federal Records Project
The North Carolina Genealogical Society undertook an award winning and nationally
acclaimed project in procuring microfilmed copies of Federal Court Records
for North Carolina that are held by the National Archives. These courts
met at various across the state leaving extensive data in their case files,
data that may prove invaluable to genealogical, historical and legal researchers.
This costly venture has been attempted in phases. Phase I completed several
years ago, resulted in approximately 70 reels of microfilmed records of the US Circuit
Court for the Raleigh district. Included are such materials as Criminal Case
Files, Circuit Court (Raleigh) 1790-1879; Circuit Court (Raleigh) 1790-1860; and
Civil Case Files (Raleigh) 1790-1860. Phase II has recently been completed
for the Elizabeth City District, with approximately 68 reels of microfilm
available for research. These cases include bankruptcy and mixed civil and
criminal cases.
These two phases are available to the public for $3,500.00. Purchased separately
each phase is $2,100. The microfilm is only available in complete phase sets at this
time. NC residents must include 7% sales tax. Shipping charges are included with the
cost.
