There is more to research than compiled military service records and pension application files\, such as public claims\, pension ledgers\, and pension payment vouchers. Records are found in the National Archives\, Ancestry.com\, Fold3.com\, the State Library and Archives\, and in some unexpected places. Clues to information on ancestors and descendants can be found in the lineage application papers of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\nCraig Roberts Scott\, MA\, CG\, FUGA is the author of The ‘Lost Pensions’: Settled Accounts of the Act of 6 April 1838 (Revised) and Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury\, Inventory 14 (Revised). Officially known as the “Bureau of Refugees\, Freedmen\, and Abandoned Lands”\, this federal agency documented a vast cross-section of post-Civil War society. This presentation explores how the Bureau served both “freedmen” – newly liberated people of African descent – and “refugees”\, a term largely referring to white Southerners displaced by the conflict. In North Carolina\, this work resulted in a massive paper trail\, detailing the lives of ancestors from every demographic of the state’s population. Attendees will learn to access and leverage local and statewide record sets to uncover genealogically rich details\, which provide a rare window into the daily lives of both Black and white families during the Reconstruction period in North Carolina\, often allowing researchers to bridge gaps in timeline and to reconstruct ancestral communities. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \n\n\n\nRenate Yarborough Sanders\, an experienced genealogist and educator\, is the descendant of formerly enslaved ancestors\, enslavers\, and free people of color. She authors two blogs and maintains an online funeral program database.Renate has a wide-spread and influential presence in the genealogy community. She provides genealogy education for national\, state and local conferences\, employee groups\, and for institutions of higher learning. Her research has been featured on PBS Radio and in a National Geographic cover story and podcast; and she has been featured on several local network television programs.Renate cohosted three seasons of “Let’s Talk North Carolina Genealogy”\, an online platform presenting programing and virtual events for North Carolina researchers\, now available on YouTube. She was recently engaged in a project for Wake Forest University\, seeking to find descendants of enslaved persons sold for the benefit of that institution and she has assisted descendants of the enslaved from George Washington’s Mount Vernon. As researchers\, we cannot figure out who this person is and how they are related to our family. Throughout the presentation actual documents and examples are included. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\nAfter retiring as Vice President at Siemens Telecom in Florida\, Stewart Dunaway\, wife Maryellen\, and daughter Sarah moved to Hillsborough in 2001.Beginning in 2005\, Stewart photographed and transcribed the entire State’s collection of road\, bridge\, mill\, ordinary and ferry records from the State Archives in Raleigh. In addition\, he transcribed and photographed all the confiscation records during the Revolutionary war\, as well as thousands of land records detailing the McCulloch Grants.During his 15-year research effort\, he applied for three new State Historical Road Markers\, one corrected and replaced\, and one removed due to invalid information. In 2019 he retired from his research and moved back to his home state of Florida.He is now working on State Land Grants in Florida. In colonial times\, English Common Law governed property rights. Knowing the law\, the records it created\, and the location of those records is necessary for successful searches. Once found\, the genealogist must read and interpret the record. Correct analysis is important to glean the maximum information from each document. He is the President and CEO of Heritage Books\, Inc.\, a genealogical publishing firm with over 9\,500 titles in print. A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than thirty-five years\, he specializes in military records\, problem-solving\, Quakers\, and publishing. He is a member of the Company of Military Historians and on the editorial board of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly.
