These records include petitions\, reports\, and contracts. Within the petition or reports\, descriptions of landowners and neighbors can be provided. Reasons for their need or discontinuance are well described thereby providing insight to the area development and migration paths\, perhaps answering why a relative moved from one location to another.This presentation will cover the record types and what genealogy information can be found within them. Throughout the presentation actual documents and examples are included. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\nAfter retiring as Vice President at Siemens Telecom in Florida\, Stewart Dunaway\, wife Maryellen\, and daughter Sarah moved to Hillsborough in 2001.Beginning in 2005\, Stewart photographed and transcribed the entire State’s collection of road\, bridge\, mill\, ordinary and ferry records from the State Archives in Raleigh. In addition\, he transcribed and photographed all the confiscation records during the Revolutionary war\, as well as thousands of land records detailing the McCulloch Grants.During his 15-year research effort\, he applied for three new State Historical Road Markers\, one corrected and replaced\, and one removed due to invalid information. In 2019 he retired from his research and moved back to his home state of Florida.He is now working on State Land Grants in Florida. In colonial times\, English Common Law governed property rights. Knowing the law\, the records it created\, and the location of those records is necessary for successful searches. Once found\, the genealogist must read and interpret the record. Correct analysis is important to glean the maximum information from each document. Ms. Leary provides the listener with tools and tips to reach a successful outcome. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\nHelen F. M. His most recent work is Understanding Revolutionary War and Invalid Pension Ledgers\, 1818 – 1872\, and the Payment Vouchers They Represent. He has authored seventeen books and several articles in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly\, the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy\, and other genealogical publications. He is the President and CEO of Heritage Books\, Inc.\, a genealogical publishing firm with over 9\,500 titles in print. A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than thirty-five years\, he specializes in military records\, problem-solving\, Quakers\, and publishing. He is a member of the Company of Military Historians and on the editorial board of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly. He is a former Treasurer and Director of the Association of Professional Genealogists. He has been a faculty member or coordinator of research tracks in the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research\, Samford University and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy\, and the Genealogical Institute of Pittsburgh. He is currently the Coordinator of the SLIG Guided Research and Consultation Track\, helping students solve their brick wall problems. Documenting these individuals can be challenging since we cannot rely on British colonial-era style records. While we can often identify shipmasters\, vessel names\, cargo\, and key businessmen\, uncovering details about crew members and a ship’s voyages is more difficult. By following the money\, we can trace mariner ancestors through customs records\, shipping documents\, correspondence\, private manuscripts\, and other records. Together we will explore where to research these seemingly invisible yet essential mariners. How to gain access to these materials will also be covered. No relationship to Blackbeard required. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\nJennifer Crowder Daugherty holds her Bachelor’s of Art in English with a minor in Women’s Studies from Eastern Kentucky University. She obtained her Master’s in Library Science from Indiana University with a concentration in Archives and Records Management. Her career as a librarian/archivist spans over fifteen years\, with the last five in her current position as the North Carolina Collection Librarian at Joyner Library\, East Carolina University. Most of the records available to researchers are in the materials created by government agencies. Records include allotment records\, annuity rolls\, census records\, correspondence\, and school records. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \n\n\n\nCraig Roberts Scott\, MA\, CG\, FUGA\, is the author of The ‘Lost Pensions’: Settled Accounts of the Act of 6 April 1838 (Revised) and Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury\, Inventory 14 (Revised). His most recent work is Understanding Revolutionary War and Invalid Pension Ledgers\, 1818 – 1872\, and the Payment Vouchers They Represent. He has authored seventeen books and several articles in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly\, the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy\, and other genealogical publications. He is the President and CEO of Heritage Books\, Inc.\, a genealogical publishing firm with over 9\,500 titles in print.A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than thirty-five years\, he specializes in military records\, problem-solving\, Quakers\, and publishing. He is a member of the Company of Military Historians and on the editorial board of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly. He is a former Treasurer and Director of the Association of Professional Genealogists. He has been a faculty member or coordinator of research tracks at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research\, Samford University and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy\, and the Genealogical Institute of Pittsburgh. He is currently the Coordinator of the SLIG Guided Research and Consultation Track\, helping students solve their brick wall problems. He has coordinated many Heritage Books Genealogical Conference and Cruises. He is a recipient of the Grahame T. Smallwood\, Jr. Award and the UGA Silver Tray Award.
