SUMMARY:Recorded Webinar with Judy G. Russell\, Feb 2026
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Genealogical Society is delighted to present:\n\n\n\nJudy G. Russell\, JD\, CG®\, CGLSM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLegal Lingo in the Tarheel State: Using Black’s Law Dictionary\n\n\n\nThis recorded Webinar will be freely available to the public from midnight Thursday night through midnight Sunday night (ET)\, 6-8 February 2026. (The live webinar was originally presented on 6 Sep 2023.) \n\n\n\nThe handout for this presentation will only be available to the public during the viewing period\, and will not be downloadable or printable. (Available via the main Webinars page\, “Current Webinar Handout” button.) It will open in a separate tab\, however\, so it can be referred to during the webinar. For logged in members\, the handout is always accessible from the main Webinars page. (On the top menu\, under Education & Events\, select Webinars to go to the main webinars page. Scroll down and click on “Explore the Webinar Library”. That page has a link to “Member Webinar Handouts” (which is arranged in alphabetical order) in the leading paragraph.) This webinar is always available to members in the Member Webinars area of the website. Each members’ webinar page also has a direct link to the handout. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Webinar:\n\n\n\nThe language of North Carolina law is part Greek\, part French\, part Latin\, even part Saxon – and all confusing. Every family’s records are chock full of legal lingo that can appear utterly baffling even to an experienced genealogist. But understanding the legal lingo in the records is a critical part of understanding the records themselves — and we figure out what we need to know using resources like Black’s Law Dictionary. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\nJudy G. Russell\, The Legal Genealogist®\, is a genealogist with a law degree. She writes\, teaches and lectures on a wide variety of genealogical topics\, providing expert guidance through the murky territory where law and family history intersect. A Colorado native with roots deep in the American south on her mother’s side and entirely in Germany on her father’s side\, she holds a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University in Washington\, D.C. and a law degree from Rutgers School of Law-Newark. Before she retired\, she worked as a newspaper reporter\, trade association writer\, legal investigator\, defense attorney\, federal prosecutor\, law editor and\, for more than 20 years\, as an adjunct member of the faculty at Rutgers Law School. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists\, the National Genealogical Society and numerous state and regional genealogical societies. A recipient of the Silver Tray Award from the Utah Genealogical Association and the 2017 Award of Excellence from the National Genealogical Society Quarterly\, she now serves as a member of the NGSQ editorial board. An internationally-known lecturer and course coordinator and faculty member at numerous genealogical institutes\, she holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist® and Certified Genealogical Lecturer℠ from the Board for Certification of Genealogists®. Her award-winning blog appears at The Legal Genealogist® website (https://www.legalgenealogist.com). \n\n\n\nThis webinar is always accessible on the website to NCGS members as a member benefit. \n\n\n\nClick on the flyer title to open the pdf in a new browser tab. Depending on your browser\, the Download button may open the pdf in a browser tab\, or offer to save it to your computer. You can always save a pdf to your computer from a browser tab.Downloadable/printable pdf Flyer for this webinar: \n\n\n\nLegal Lingo Flyer
