Do you have ancestors from several different parts of North Carolina? Would you like to talk to people who live where your ancestors lived? Come visit with genealogical and historical societies from all over North Carolina at our Society Night at the Museum, 11 May 2017, from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Spread throughout the floors of the beautiful North Carolina Museum of History will be dozens of representatives from various societies to help you learn more about their areas. They will be offering their unique county publications, memberships to their societies, and advice on repositories in their counties. Where might your great-grandparents’ family cemetery be located? Ask someone who may know your cousins. What church is closest to the old family farm? Talk to someone who lives just down the road from it. Or, if they don’t know the answer, they will know someone who will. These are the wonderful connections you can make while visiting with folks who have the same passions that you do. They know their counties, they know the people, and they know where to find their specific county’s records. Don’t miss these valuable representatives just waiting to speak with you!
The entire North Carolina Museum of History will be open just for Society Night. You will be able to view all of the museum’s exhibits when you attend this special evening. Wander through “The Story of North Carolina,” offering 14,000 year’s worth of our state’s history and visit the newest exhibit, which commemorates the 100th anniversary of WWI and North Carolina’s part in it
The State Archives of North Carolina is located diagonally across the street from the Museum of History and will have extended hours that evening. Enjoy visiting the museum before or after your research time.
The North Carolina Museum of History is an easy 12-minute walk from the convention center. We will lead a walking group, leaving at 5:45 p.m. from the front of the convention center, to Society Night at the Museum. If you are unable to walk, the free city bus (the R-Line) makes stops in front of the Raleigh Convention Center and beside the Museum of History every 20 minutes. Parking is also available near the museum.
