Digitized Online Collections Courtesy of NCGS

In the course of creating the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, materials from private collections are pursued. NCGS pays to have these materials digitized, when possible. This table lists the collections which have been digitized, using this or a similar process, since 2016. NCGS is very committed to “promote the collection, preservation and utilization of manuscripts, documents, and other materials of genealogical and historical value”, and this is one way it is doing so.

Enter any search term in the Search field (top right above table), sort by Collection Title, Record, or Location using the triangle icon beside the column heading, or use the field just below the column heading to filter, or to refine a search. More about this project
Effectively NCGS pays a reasonable fee to request the digitization of identified materials (typically 1 small folder of material or 1 small volume); many of which are housed at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Once UNC-CH digitizes the materials, the editor of the NCGS Journal gets first dibs at accessing the digitized material and subsequently that material is directly linked to the appropriate collection’s finding aid so that all researchers are now able to access the material online from home or elsewhere.

Other repositories also allow one to purchase the digitization of materials. Sometimes, based on a focused request, an institution will waive a fee and make the material available. This list will be added to as, at the behest of NCGS, additional materials are digitized in support of the NCGS Journal. Recognize that since this material almost always directly correlates to NCGS Journal content, articles based on this digitized content do include source information linking to any materials available online.
