Raleigh and the surrounding area is home to the main repositories and resources for North Carolina genealogical research. Consider spending an extra day or two to take advantage of these resources to help with your research. The State Archives and the State Library are in the same building, only 10 minutes by car from the conference venue.


The State Archives of North Carolina (SANC)

The State Archives of North Carolina is the repository for almost all original documents needed for effective North Carolina genealogical research, including most of the county records which are packed with genealogical value. They provide public access to millions of individual items and an extensive microfilm collection, much of which cannot be found online. There is a large and comfortable Search Room with a friendly and helpful staff, and you can browse collection contents at your leisure. Non-flash photography is permitted with no restrictions on image usage. SANC also has a comprehensive multi-media collection of photographs, film, audio, and more.

The State Library of North Carolina (SLNC)

The State Library of North Carolina has an extensive collections of books, periodicals, and other publications to help with your genealogical research. Holdings include books with abstracts of of county and state records, books about specific families, books about all aspects of North Carolina history, and countless journals and publications from genealogical and historical societies. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

UNC-Chapel Hill is around a 30 minute drive from Raleigh, and is home to two major research facilities: The Southern Historical Collection, and the North Carolina Collection, both located at UNC’s Wilson Library.
