NCGS and HB 2
We have heard concerns from both members and non-members about the recently passed legislation signed by the governor, House Bill 2 (HB 2). In fulfilling the missions of the North Carolina Genealogical Society, the Board is committed to inclusion and does not discriminate.
As Local Host Chair for the NGS Family History Conference in Raleigh, 10-13 May 2017, the theme, Family History Lives Here, is reflective of the fact that genealogy and family history pursuits in North Carolina are inclusive of all, regardless of race, color, religion, age, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. The Board respects the individual right of every NCGS member to exercise freedom of thought and action with regard to the North Carolina law.
We were pleased to see that the Wake County Commissioners have also pledged their commitment to inclusion, stating that County employees and applicants cannot be discriminated against based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, family status or political affiliation. As a board and as a county, we remain committed to those principles.
NCGS supports the National Genealogical Societys practice in not contracting with hotels and convention centers that discriminate, and the Board of Directors has sent a letter of concern to the Raleigh Convention Center and our conference hotels, asking that they help ensure Raleigh is a safe and welcoming location for all of our 2017 conference attendees. Board volunteers will endeavor to ensure that every effort is made for our friends, colleagues, and guests to have an enjoyable experience.
