Bluegrass at the NCGS Pig Pickin’ BBQ

Where can you enjoy a foot-stomping good time with a fantastic bluegrass band? Come to the North Carolina Genealogical Society’s Pig Pickin’ BBQ and Bluegrass Event at the Holshouser Building on the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. You will be greeted by the sounds of the Grass Cats, an award winning bluegrass band from the Raleigh area. They are the only group on an independent recording label to have four singles reach #1 on the Bluegrass Unlimited national chart.

Songwriter and mandolin player Russell Johnson started the Grass Cats with original members Tim Woodall (bass) and Chris Hill (fiddle) in 1997. Russell’s soaring tenor compliments Tim’s richly textured lead vocal and Chris adds the third part harmony that is such a big part of the Cats’ vocal arsenal. Rick Lafleur on banjo and Bailey Coe on guitar provide the drive.

With 20 years of performances and eight very successful CDs, the Grass Cats are ready to bring their lively foot-stomping fiddle and banjo music, bluegrass classics, tight vocal harmonies and a cappella-style gospel quartets to our event. Mix in their “top of the chart” original music and down home humor and you’ll enjoy a performance you will not soon forget.
