North Carolina BBQ and Bluegrass

We are so looking forward to the North Carolina BBQ and Bluegrass Event to be held 10 May 2017 during the NGS Conference. As will all “events,” you don’t need to be and NGS nor NCGS member, nor even attending the conference to participate. That makes this a great event to bring a spouse, family member, or friend to! This week, we will be spotlighting all the food, music, and artisans for you to enjoy, each, in a separate post!

First up — the Food!

Where can you enjoy fantastic pulled pork BBQ, tender fried catfish, and grilled chicken with your wonderful genealogy friends? Come to the North Carolina Genealogical Society’s BBQ and Bluegrass Event at the Holshouser building on the North Carolina State Fairgrounds! In addition to the pork, fish, and chicken, Big Al’s BBQ and Catering will serve delicious fried okra, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, hush puppies, rolls, and corn bread. If you’ve got room for dessert, you’ll be treated to Banana Pudding and Apple Cobbler. Sweet and unsweet tea will round out this southern style party. If you are vegetarian, please select that option when registering. We have a special entree planned just for you.

Big Al’s BBQ has been a family-owned and operated company for over 30 years. They have won numerous awards, including being named the 2012 Cary BBQ Classic Grand Champion! Their meat is hickory smoked with additional cherry and pecan woods. It’s slow cooked over the wood fire for 12-14 hours. North Carolina products are featured, including a big variety of BBQ sauces. Big Al’s serves the most flavorful smoked BBQ in our famous southern style. The fried catfish is extremely tender, moist, and flavorful. Their hush puppies are crispy outside, soft and sweet inside, and made fresh daily. Big Al will be bringing his 32-foot mobile kitchen with a smoker mounted on the back to prepare fresh, hot food for our event.

Whether we call it a shindig, a wingding, or a pig pickin’, it’s always an unforgettable time of good friends, good music, and good eating — Southern style!
