About the Webinar:

This presentation will offer an introduction to the processes and procedures for using and discovering manuscript and archival materials about your family in UNC-Chapel Hill’s Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library. We will discuss the Southern Historical Collection, the Southern Folklife Collection, University Archives, the North Carolina Collection, the Rare Book Collection, and the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center.
This workshop will present a number of scenarios such as looking for a grandparent’s favorite song, locating student information for an ancestor who attended UNC, accessing your family’s private papers, and contextualizing the lives of enslaved people. Our discussion will not be exhaustive, but it will present you with a sense of the first steps for visiting our Library.

About the Speaker:

Matt Turi is the Manuscripts Research and Instruction Librarian at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill’s Wilson Special Collections Library, a role he has held since 2006. As a member of the Research and Instructional Services team, his work is focused on connecting faculty and students with the university’s archival holdings. He helps researchers utilize primary sources to explore complex historical questions and manages the Wilson Library Fellowship Program, which provides funding and research opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and independent scholars.
In addition to his library role, since 2006, Turi has served as Adjunct Faculty at UNC’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS), where he formerly taught the Introduction to Archives course and supervised Master’s papers. He is also actively involved in broader campus initiatives related to history and social justice, including work with the University’s Commission on History, Race, and A Way Forward, and he has participated in UNC Faculty Governance as an elected member of the Faculty Council.
Turi holds a Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) from UNC SILS, earned in 2004, and a Master of Arts (MA) from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, awarded in 1996. Before joining the staff at UNC, he worked for the North Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board.
